Gutter Calculator
Convert measured eave or gutter runs into whole stock sections using the section length sold by your supplier. Add a visible extra allowance and optional material price.
Calculate each separate gutter run, not just total feet
The calculator above uses total linear feet. When several separate roof edges need their own straight stock pieces, dividing only the combined length may undercount whole sections. Enter each measured run below; this check reuses the same stock length, extra allowance and optional price above.
Enter your own roof runs, or load an explicitly fictional example to learn the calculation.
| Run | Length (ft) | Whole sections |

What the difference does—and does not—mean
For 18, 14 and 8 ft runs with 10 ft stock pieces and no extra allowance, a pooled count is only four sections. Counting each independent run without offcut reuse requires 2 + 2 + 1 = five sections. Offcuts might be reusable if allowed by the gutter system, but that requires a real cutting and joining plan. This estimator takes the conservative no-reuse approach and makes every rounding step visible.
Use the real lengths along the fascia. This calculation does not determine inside/outside corners, outlets, downspouts, hangers, drainage capacity or slope. For seamless gutters or custom fabricated runs, the stock-section model may not apply. Compare a full quoted installation using the gutter project cost calculator.
Continue your project estimate
Estimate gutter project cost →Gutter section formula
Add the lengths of the roof edges that will receive gutter. The calculator applies your selected extra percentage, divides by the stock section length and rounds up to whole sections.
sections = ceil(total run × (1 + extra %) ÷ section length)
The purchased stock length is also shown so you can see the difference between measured run and whole-section ordering.
What this calculator intentionally does not guess
Gutter material quantity is not the same as drainage design. Downspout count and location depend on roof area, rainfall intensity, gutter profile, outlet capacity and the building layout. Corners, miters, end caps, outlets, hangers, brackets and expansion details also depend on the selected system.
This tool therefore estimates straight gutter stock only. Use manufacturer instructions and local rainfall/design requirements for system sizing and accessory quantities.
Measure each run before buying
Measure along the fascia or eave where the gutter will actually be installed rather than using floor-plan dimensions blindly. Separate roof sections, inside and outside corners and changes in elevation can affect cutting and joining. Seamless gutters are usually fabricated to measured runs and may not use stock-section rounding at all.

Example: stock sections across three separate roof runs
Suppose an installation has gutter runs of 18, 14 and 8 feet. Together they total 40 linear feet. At 10 ft per stock section, dividing the combined length by section length gives 4 sections. But if each run must use its own continuous sections and offcuts cannot be reused, the minimum is ceiling(18 ÷ 10) + ceiling(14 ÷ 10) + ceiling(8 ÷ 10) = 5 sections.
This difference illustrates why a total-linear-foot calculator is only a starting quantity. Some compatible offcuts may be reused if the installation system allows the appropriate joins; seamless gutter systems follow a different fabrication process. Draw and measure each roof run, then separately identify inside/outside corners, outlets, downspouts, end caps and brackets.
