Generic project estimator

Quick Project Cost Estimator

Use one transparent formula for a project that is not yet specific enough for one of the dedicated calculators below.

Your rates · no hidden price table

Waste starts at 0%. Enter only a rate or allowance that applies to your actual material, supplier or quote.

Measure · price · compare

Plan a project from materials to cost

Start with the project you are doing. Keep the measurements, purchase allowance and quoted scope together when moving from a quantity check to a budget.

Replace a roofRoof surface area · sq ft
  1. Measure materials

Use measured sloped roof area, or a simple footprint with pitch. Check bundle coverage on the exact roofing product.

    Shingle Calculator
  2. Estimate cost

Use roof area for installation and a separate material allowance. Itemize tear-off, disposal and flashing when they are excluded from the base rate.

    Roofing Cost Calculator

Check the basis: Building floor area and sloped roof surface area are different.

Install vinyl plank flooringFloor area · sq ft
  1. Measure materials

Measure the floor, then check carton coverage and your chosen extra-material allowance to calculate whole cartons.

    Flooring Calculator
  2. Estimate cost

Enter floor area with material and installation rates per square foot. Keep trim, transitions, removal and subfloor prep visible.

    Vinyl Flooring Cost Calculator

Check the basis: Carton count is not the square-foot input used by the cost calculator.

Replace carpetFloor area · sq ft
  1. Measure materials

Record measured room area, roll width and layout assumptions. Roll purchasing can exceed the area actually being covered.

    Carpet Calculator
  2. Estimate cost

Start with measured floor area and the quoted material and installation rates. Account explicitly for additional material, pad, stairs and removal.

    Carpet Cost Calculator

Check the basis: Check whether a quoted material rate is per square foot or per square yard.

Hang and finish drywallWall / ceiling area · sq ft
  1. Measure materials

Measure walls and ceilings, subtract the openings you intend to exclude, then record net area, purchase area and whole-sheet count separately.

    Drywall Calculator
  2. Estimate cost

Use the area basis that matches the quote. Convert a sheet price using that sheet’s face area; check which finishing work is included.

    Drywall Cost Calculator

Check the basis: Purchase area may already include waste. Do not apply the same allowance twice.

Pour a concrete slabConcrete volume · cubic yd
  1. Measure materials

Use length, width and thickness to estimate volume. Keep the base volume separate from the additional material you choose.

    Concrete Calculator
  2. Estimate cost

Use quoted rates per cubic yard in the cost estimator. Keep delivery, short-load charges, pumping, reinforcement and finishing visible.

    Concrete Cost Calculator

Check the basis: A labor quote per square foot needs a matching area basis; do not enter it as a rate per cubic yard.

Keep the estimates together

Use “Add estimate to Project Budget” on a cost result to build a multi-part budget. Compare the same scope and avoid adding a charge twice when it is already included in a quoted rate.

Use cost calculators as quote-normalization tools

A project-cost result is most useful when the quantity basis and scope are visible. Keep the same measured area, length, volume or item count when comparing two price scenarios, and change only the rates or scope items that are actually different.

If a quote bundles material and labor into one installed rate, do not invent a split. If delivery, disposal, removal, permits or equipment are quoted separately, keep them visible as fixed extras instead of hiding them in a unit price.

Before deciding between installers, compare two contractor bids side by side with removal and preparation exclusions made explicit. For multi-part jobs, read From Material Quantities to a Project Budget.

Flooring and remodeling estimates

For interior projects, use the measured area or unit count first, then replace every example assumption with current supplier or installer pricing. The Laminate Flooring Installation Cost Calculator keeps material, labor, waste and fixed extras separate. The Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator works as an editable allowance model for a scope that can vary widely.

Explore a kitchen material and cabinet preview before entering price quotes; or try our bathroom visual planning tool. Both reuse their existing canonical remodel calculator URLs.

For a multi-part job, save individual estimates to the Project Budget Workspace rather than hiding several different project assumptions inside one rate.

Why the rates are editable

Material and installation prices can vary by product, supplier, contractor, location and project complexity. Enter a supplier price, installer rate or quote and the calculator performs the arithmetic around it.

Use the related quantity calculators first when you need help measuring material requirements.
