Asphalt / Blacktop Driveway Cost Calculator
Estimate an asphalt or blacktop driveway budget from measured square footage and local rates, then optionally convert area and compacted thickness into asphalt tons when your supplier quotes by weight.
Continue your project estimate
Compare driveway sealing cost →Driveway cost depends on scope, not just square footage
Surface area is the starting point, but preparation, base condition, thickness, access and local paving rates can materially change an asphalt driveway quote. This calculator keeps the rate editable rather than implying one national cost.
Use separate scenarios for resurfacing versus a more extensive rebuild when the underlying scope changes.
- Use a current local paving rate.
- Separate fixed preparation or disposal charges.
- Do not treat a square-foot estimate as a contractor quote.
Estimate asphalt tons from area and compacted thickness
Use this when your supplier quotes asphalt by the short ton. The reference density starts at 148 lb/ft³ and stays editable because the actual unit weight depends on the mix and compaction.
Asphalt Institute guidance says asphalt mixture typically weighs about 142–148 lb/ft³ in place and uses 148 lb/ft³ for its estimating example. Exact density varies with the mixture and degree of compaction, so replace the reference when your project specification or supplier provides a value.

Asphalt and “blacktop” driveway estimates
Homeowners often use blacktop as a general term for asphalt paving. The calculator does not assume a universal mix, thickness or installed price: use the dimensions and rates that match the paving quote or supplier information for your project.
How the two asphalt estimates work
The main cost estimator uses driveway square footage because paving prices are often quoted on that basis. If you enter a material-only rate, add labor separately; if your per-square-foot rate is already an installed total, do not enter another labor charge for the same scope. Fixed extras capture genuinely excluded grading, base repair, edging, drainage or demolition.
square-foot cost = adjusted area × material rate + area × labor rate + fixed extras
The optional tonnage planner uses compacted volume and density. Convert thickness from inches to feet, multiply area by thickness to get cubic feet, multiply by the entered density, then divide pounds by 2,000 to get short tons.
short tons = area (ft²) × thickness (ft) × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000
Examples
Square-foot quote: an 800 sq ft driveway at $4/sq ft material and $2/sq ft labor starts at $3,200 material and $1,600 labor before extras. Example rates are illustrative only; replace them with supplier or contractor pricing for your project.
Tonnage check: 800 sq ft at 3 in compacted thickness is 200 ft³. At the editable 148 lb/ft³ estimating reference, that is 29,600 lb or 14.8 short tons before any extra percentage.
Worked example: compare asphalt quotes sold by ton and by square foot
Suppose a paved driveway measures 800 sq ft and the specified compacted asphalt thickness is 3 in. Using an editable estimating density of 148 lb/ft³, the volume is 800 × (3 ÷ 12) = 200 ft³. The estimated weight is 200 × 148 = 29,600 lb, or 14.8 short tons before additional material.
If you explicitly allow 5% extra asphalt material, the estimated purchased quantity becomes 15.54 short tons. Consider two fictional supplier quotes for an equivalent material-only scope:
| Comparable material quote | Calculation | Material total |
|---|---|---|
| Option A — per short ton | 15.54 short tons × $120/ton | $1,864.80 |
| Option B — per installed sq ft | 800 sq ft × $2.50/sq ft | $2,000 |
| Difference in listed material totals | Option B minus Option A | $135.20 |
Option A has the lower material-only subtotal in this invented example. It does not establish the cheaper completed driveway: truck delivery, minimum load, mobilization, paving labor, old-pavement removal, grading, drainage, base repair, compacted lift requirements, taxes and equipment can reverse the comparison. Verify that both rates describe the same mix, thickness and included scope before you compare them.
Enter your supplier's actual costs into the tonnage planner above, then use the square-foot project estimator for your complete installed project budget. They are alternative ways to price overlapping asphalt materials, so do not add their material totals together or duplicate them in Project Budget.
Asphalt driveway quote checklist before selecting a contractor
- Dimensions and mix: confirm paved area, mix specification, density basis, compacted thickness and number of lifts; no universal depth is assumed.
- Existing surface: distinguish overlay from full removal, disposal, excavation and subbase repair.
- Drainage and boundaries: identify slope, water management, edges, transitions and access limitations as separate scopes.
- Commercial terms: ask whether taxes, delivery, equipment, minimum loads, mobilization, compaction and finishing are already included.
- Contract quality: verify written specifications, applicable permits, insurance, workmanship provisions and warranty terms.
Have two installed offers with different included items? Use the contractor quote comparison to normalize those exclusions. This simple materials tool cannot verify a pavement design, structural loading or local construction standards.
