Spray foam cost

Spray Foam Insulation Cost Calculator: Cost per Sq Ft

Estimate spray-foam project cost from the area to be insulated using the product or contractor pricing that applies to your assembly.

Estimate project cost

Use rates from your supplier, installer or quote. ProjectCalcWorks does not insert a hidden national price assumption.

Insulation cost depends on assembly and quoted rate

Spray-foam pricing varies by product, thickness, access, assembly and installer. Use the insulated area and a current quote or budget rate rather than treating a generic national price as authoritative.

For material-planning questions that are not spray foam, use the dedicated insulation calculators and product coverage data.

How this estimate works

Enter insulated square footage and your actual quoted material or installed price per square foot. If the quote bundles both, do not add labor again. Use fixed extras only for separately quoted access, removal, masking or other project work.

total = adjusted material quantity × material rate + project quantity × labor rate + fixed extras

Example

A 1,000 sq ft area at $2.25/sq ft material and $1.75/sq ft labor starts at $2,250 material and $1,750 labor before extras. Example rates are illustrative only; replace them with supplier or contractor pricing for your project.

Spray foam insulation cost per square foot

The calculator reports a blended project cost per square foot from the material, labor and fixed-extra values you enter. Open-cell versus closed-cell systems, installed thickness, access, preparation and contractor scope can change the rate, so use product or quoted values rather than a hidden national default.

Convert a spray-foam board-foot price into the square-foot rate

A board foot of spray foam is a theoretical material volume equivalent to 1 sq ft at 1 in thickness. A supplier or installer may quote the material in board feet while this cost calculator accepts a material rate per installed square foot. Converting the rate first avoids entering a board-foot price into the wrong unit.

theoretical board feet = net insulated area (sq ft) × specified thickness (in)

equivalent material rate ($/sq ft) = specified thickness (in) × quoted material rate ($/board ft)

For a hypothetical 1,000 sq ft area and a fictional material quote of $1.40 per board foot, the arithmetic is:

Illustrative material-only comparison at two design thicknesses
ScenarioBoard feetMaterial onlyRate to enter ($/sq ft)
2 in specified thickness2,000$2,800$2.80
3 in specified thickness3,000$4,200$4.20

Enter the chosen equivalent material-only $/sq ft rate in the calculator above, with the actual measured floor, wall or roof surface as the project quantity. Add installation labor separately only if the quoted price excludes it. If the contractor supplies an all-in installed $/sq ft price, do not also charge material and labor on top of that bundled price.

This calculation does not predict real kit yield, jobsite expansion, loss, pass thickness, fire-barrier needs or whether a particular foam system meets code. These factors and the suitable product/R-value are project-specific. Two different foam types or specified thicknesses should not be considered interchangeable simply because their per-board-foot prices match.

Installed thickness changes foam quantity even at the same area

Spray-foam quantity is sometimes expressed in board feet, where one board foot represents one square foot at one inch of thickness. A selected 1,000 sq ft surface at 2 inches has a theoretical 2,000 board feet of foam volume; at 3 inches it has 3,000 board feet, which is 50% more volume for the same surface. That does not mean installed material cost always rises 50%, because kit yield, expansion, site loss and the contractor's quoting method also matter.

Ask whether a quoted square-foot rate refers to a specific installed thickness, open-cell or closed-cell product, surface preparation and any required thermal or ignition barrier. A rate for two inches should not be compared directly with a rate for three inches without normalizing that scope. The calculator above accepts the exact installed price you have; it does not choose R-values, product type or a compliant insulation assembly.
