Base stud formula

The estimator divides wall length by the selected on-center spacing, rounds up the number of spaces, then adds one end stud.

base studs = ceiling(wall length in ÷ spacing in) + 1

Why extra studs are a separate input

Door and window openings, corners, intersections, blocking and load paths can add framing that a simple spacing formula cannot infer safely. Enter those additional studs from your actual framing plan.

Material estimate, not structural design

This tool does not size headers, determine load-bearing requirements or verify building-code compliance. It only estimates quantities from the inputs you provide.

Before buying framing lumber

Use the base stud result only as the regularly spaced starting count. Add the studs required by your drawings for openings, corners, intersections or other details. Plate runs are also explicit because the calculator should not decide whether a wall needs a particular top- or bottom-plate configuration.
