How Many Flooring Cartons Do I Need?
Divide adjusted floor area by the exact square-foot coverage per carton and round up.
Worked example
For 500 sq ft with 10 percent extra, adjusted area is 550 sq ft. If a carton covers 22 sq ft, the estimate is 25 cartons.
Use the Vinyl Plank Flooring Calculator for your own area, waste and carton coverage.
Use the coverage printed on the carton
Carton coverage varies by product, plank size and packaging, so do not convert floor area into boxes using a generic number. Measure the net floor area, choose an explicit allowance for cuts and unusable offcuts, then divide by the exact square-foot coverage shown for the flooring you plan to buy.
Always round the carton count upward because partial cartons are normally not a reliable purchasing assumption. If rooms are separated or the layout changes direction, consider whether offcuts from one area can realistically be reused in another before reducing the allowance.
Plan each product and color separately
If a project uses more than one flooring product, color or plank format, calculate each area separately. Extra material from one SKU cannot automatically cover a shortage in another, and carton coverage can differ even between visually similar products.
For adjoining rooms, decide whether the installation will run continuously or whether thresholds and direction changes create separate layouts. That affects how useful offcuts are and how much extra material is practical.
From cartons to project cost
After estimating purchase area or cartons, continue with the Vinyl Flooring Cost Calculator or Laminate Flooring Installation Cost Calculator using the rates for the product and installer you are actually considering.

Compare two cartons before choosing a product
Keep the same 500 sq ft measured floor and 10% waste from the first example. Planned purchase area is 550 sq ft. A 22 sq ft carton requires 25 whole cartons, but a different product sold in 21 sq ft cartons requires ceiling(550 ÷ 21) = 27 cartons. The second product does not necessarily waste more flooring; its packaging covers less area.
To compare prices fairly, calculate the total packaged purchase price for each product: whole cartons × price per carton. Do not multiply the measured 500 sq ft by the advertised carton price. If an installer's quote already includes a cutting allowance, avoid applying an additional hidden waste percentage to that same quoted quantity. Use the Vinyl Flooring Cost Calculator to price the actual carton counts.
Worked comparison: total material price can reverse the carton-price ranking
Consider a hypothetical 500 sq ft floor with a chosen 10% allowance: 550 sq ft to cover. Product A covers 22 sq ft per carton at an illustrative $62 per carton; Product B covers 21 sq ft at an illustrative $57. These are made-up supplier prices for demonstrating the calculation, not market rates.
| Measure | Product A | Product B |
|---|---|---|
| Carton coverage | 22 sq ft | 21 sq ft |
| Whole cartons | ceil(550 ÷ 22) = 25 | ceil(550 ÷ 21) = 27 |
| Purchased coverage | 550 sq ft | 567 sq ft |
| Per-carton price | $62 | $57 |
| Material subtotal | $1,550 | $1,539 |
Product B needs two extra cartons but is still $11 cheaper in this scenario. If Product B instead costs $58 per carton, its total becomes $1,566, or $16 more than Product A. A seemingly small per-carton change matters when multiplied by the actual whole-carton count.
Costs this comparison cannot cover
Neither subtotal includes delivery, underlayment, transitions, labor, sales tax or different product performance. The same percentage allowance may also be inappropriate for different patterns. Match the exact product SKU, actual package coverage and installation plan before choosing. Run each option in the Flooring Calculator; then use the Vinyl Flooring Cost Calculator for the project's separate charges and the quote comparison guide for installed scope.
