DIY plank flooring layout

Plank Flooring Row Layout Planner

Before cutting your first row, check whether the final row would be unusually narrow. Use the actual face width of a plank and the expansion gap and minimum cut width specified by its manufacturer.

Your actual floor measurements

Gap and minimum start at zero because the site cannot select them for an unknown flooring product. Check your chosen installation instructions and enter the actual required values before deciding on cuts.

Worked example with a narrow ending strip

Across a 120-inch room span, a hypothetical selected product has 7-inch face-width planks, a quarter-inch expansion gap at each edge and a 3-inch minimum cut-row width. The usable span is 119.5 inches. Seventeen full rows use 119 inches, leaving a 0.5-inch final strip. To avoid that under-width cut, splitting the sum of one full plank and the final strip evenly gives (7 + 0.5) ÷ 2 = 3.75 inches for both edge rows, with sixteen full rows between them. Check the actual manufacturer's instructions before cutting.

Use different tools for different questions

Our Vinyl Plank Flooring Calculator estimates cartons and material purchase costs. The row planner instead checks the widths of installed starting and ending rows. For product selection, installation limits and different flooring systems, read the matching flooring choices guide.

From estimate to decision

Avoid accepting a half-inch finishing strip

An illustrative 120-inch span with a quarter-inch perimeter gap at each end leaves 119.5 inches of coverage. Seventeen full seven-inch plank widths use 119 inches, leaving a half-inch finishing strip if the first row stays full width.

Balancing the same span can use 16 full-width middle rows plus two 3.75-inch edge rows: 112 + 7.5 = 119.5 inches, or 18 rows in total. This solves the width balance only. It does not determine end-joint staggering, door transitions or how many packages the floor needs.

Check before the next step

Use the flooring product's actual coverage width, expansion requirements and minimum cut limits. The example's gap and width choices are illustrative inputs, not universal installation rules.
