Vinyl Siding Calculator

Estimate net wall area, purchase area and siding squares after subtracting windows and doors. Add the exact carton coverage or price for the product you plan to buy.

Siding area formula

Start with gross exterior wall area, subtract measured windows and doors, then apply any waste allowance you choose for cuts and unusable pieces.

purchase area = (gross wall area − openings) × (1 + waste %)

The calculator also converts purchase area to siding squares. One siding square represents 100 square feet of coverage.

Vinyl siding and carton coverage

Vinyl siding and other cladding products are packaged differently by manufacturer and profile. If the exact product lists square feet per carton, enter that coverage and the calculator rounds the order up to whole cartons. This avoids hiding a package-size assumption that may not match the product you choose.

Materials this siding calculator does not infer

Corner posts, starter strips, J-channel, trim, soffit, fascia, flashing and other accessories depend on the wall layout and siding system. This tool estimates cladding area only, so accessory quantities should be taken from the project layout and manufacturer installation instructions.

Siding area is only the beginning of the order

Wall area can be converted into siding squares or cartons, but corners, starter strip, J-channel, trim around openings and transitions are separate parts of the system. Story height and wall shape can also affect cuts and usable offcuts.

Measure each wall elevation, handle major openings consistently and enter the exact carton coverage for the selected product. Do not use the siding-area result to infer fastening, water-resistive-barrier or flashing requirements; those depend on the wall assembly and manufacturer instructions.

Example: count wall area separately from cartons

Suppose two simple exterior wall elevations cover 900 and 700 sq ft gross. Doors and windows that genuinely remove siding total 110 sq ft. The net area is 900 + 700 − 110 = 1,490 sq ft. With a selected 8% cutting allowance, planning area is 1,609.2 sq ft, or 16.092 siding squares before any package rounding. If the chosen siding carton actually covers 200 sq ft, ceiling(1,609.2 ÷ 200) gives 9 cartons.

Those coverage and allowance figures are hypothetical inputs. Siding panels may require extra cuts at gables and wall ends; the calculator does not count starter strip, J-channel, corner posts, soffit or fasteners. Measure each elevation and use the specific manufacturer's package coverage and trim schedule when planning an order.
