Brick Wall Calculator

Estimate face-brick quantity from wall area, the actual brick face dimensions and the mortar joint you plan to use. Add a visible waste allowance and optional price per brick.

Calculate bricks for a wall

Brick wall quantity formula

The calculator treats one brick plus the entered mortar joint as a repeating wall module. It converts wall area to square inches and divides by that module area before rounding the purchase quantity up to whole bricks.

brick module area = (brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)

base bricks = wall area in² ÷ brick module area

Why brick dimensions and mortar joint stay editable

Brick sizes and joint widths vary. A calculator that assumes one universal brick module can produce the wrong result for a different manufacturer, style or bond. Enter the face dimensions of the brick you intend to buy and the joint width used in the project specification.

Wall area and openings

This tool expects the net wall area you want to cover. Measure gross wall area and subtract windows, doors or other large openings before entering the result. Returns, corners, arches, bond patterns and cut losses can still change the real purchase quantity, which is why waste remains an explicit input.

Bond pattern and cuts can change the practical brick order

The face-area formula gives a transparent starting quantity, but the usable order also depends on corners, returns, piers, arches and the bond pattern. A running bond can reuse some half-brick cuts differently from a more decorative pattern, so equal wall areas do not always consume material in exactly the same way.

Keep the calculator result tied to the brick face size and mortar joint you actually measured. Then review the elevation or layout for special pieces and cuts before turning the theoretical count into a purchase order.

Calculate a wall opening without forgetting the layout

A 12 × 8 ft wall has 96 sq ft of gross face area. A door measuring 3 × 7 ft removes 21 sq ft, leaving 75 sq ft to be faced if the full opening is excluded. With an illustrative repeating brick-and-joint module of 8 × 3 inches (24 sq in), each square foot contains 144 ÷ 24 = 6 theoretical bricks. The baseline is therefore 450 bricks. A deliberately chosen 5% extra allowance raises the planning count to ceiling(450 × 1.05) = 473 bricks.

Returns around openings, corners, special bond patterns and usable cut pieces change final purchasing. Treat this as a face-coverage comparison for your specified module, not a masonry structural design or mortar quantity.
