Tile Calculator
Estimate square footage, whole tiles, boxes and optional cost with visible product assumptions.

Measure the surface, subtract openings, choose the extra material allowance that matches the layout, and use the exact box coverage printed for the product you plan to buy.
Extra material stays editable
Room shape, pattern, cuts and breakage can change the quantity required, so the extra-material allowance remains visible and editable.
A rectangular room with a straight layout generally produces fewer cuts than a diagonal pattern, herringbone layout, shower surround or space with many corners. Keeping the allowance editable avoids pretending that one percentage is correct for every tile project.
Use exact box coverage for purchasing
Tile is commonly sold by the box, and the number of pieces per box can vary even when two tiles have the same nominal dimensions. For purchasing, the square-foot coverage printed on the exact product box or specification is the most useful input.
The calculator keeps box coverage separate from tile dimensions. Tile dimensions can provide a piece-count estimate, while box coverage determines the whole-box purchase estimate. This makes it easier to compare the geometric result with the packaging you will actually buy.
Tile dimensions and piece count
If you enter tile length and width, the calculator converts the tile face area from square inches to square feet and divides the purchase area by that value. The result is rounded upward to a whole tile count.
That piece count is an estimate of coverage, not a layout plan. Grout joints, pattern orientation, cut pieces and reusable offcuts can affect how many full tiles are required in practice.
Floor tile, wall tile and backsplash projects
The area math is the same whether the tiled surface is a floor, wall or backsplash: measure the surface that will receive tile and subtract any openings that will not be tiled. What changes is the installation system around the tile.
This calculator does not determine mortar, grout, underlayment, waterproofing, expansion joints or substrate preparation. Those requirements depend on the tile, joint dimensions, substrate, location and manufacturer instructions.
Example tile calculation
For a 100 square-foot surface with a 10% extra-material allowance, the purchase area becomes 110 square feet. If the selected tile covers 12 square feet per box, the calculator divides 110 by 12 and rounds upward to 10 boxes.
If the tiles are 12 × 12 inches, each tile covers approximately one square foot, so the same 110 square feet corresponds to about 110 tiles before considering how pieces are packed into boxes.
